Increase of Graduate Jobs in Slovakia

With the gradual recovery of the economy, the number of suitable vacancies for graduates is gradually increasing. The number of unemployed under the age of 29 is at its lowest since the start of the pandemic and is slowly returning to its previous level. According to data from the Labor Office for Social and Family Affairs , while in January there were 36,575 jobs available for graduates, their number increased to 37,817 in February and 41,612 in March, which represents an increase of 51.5% year-on-year. In fact, in March 2021 there were 27,466 vacancies. At the end of March this year, the largest number of vacancies were in the industrial production sector (10,439), followed by administrative services (6,622) and the transport and logistics sector (3,173). According to Matúš Baliak of the Social Policy Institute, the significant increase in the number of vacancies suitable for graduates reflects both the gradual recovery of the Slovak economy and the long-term imbalance between labor supply and demand. Another factor that can facilitate the integration of graduates in the labor market is the aging of the population. The Ministry of Labor has launched a series of projects – “Seize your chance” (Chyť sa svojej šance ) and “Postgraduate practice” ( Absolventská prax ) – aimed at reducing the number of unemployed young graduates through new job opportunities. Over the past six months, the first project has helped create nearly 4,000 jobs, while the second helps high school or college graduates under the age of 26 gain professional skills and practical experience in business.
