A handy handrail solution for lifts

For those lifts (or elevators) that do not have any handrails, fitting them retrospectively has, in the past, been difficult to do and expensive to implement. This is where the e-li handrail solution is perfect. Approved Document M (2015 edition) Volume 2 is a building regulation that applies to the accessibility and use of buildings other than dwellings (homes). It provides direction on enabling a public building to conform to the Equality Act, previously called DDA (Disability Discrimination Act). Section three of this document states that all users of a lift should be able to use it independently without concern and that a handrail is useful for those requiring reassurance or assistance whilst travelling in the lift. There is also a requirement that handrails must provide coverage lengthwise at least 90% wall-to-wall. This requirement is in place in case of falls, slips or trips within the lift (elevator) cabin; the use of a handrail is a safe way to ensure the user can help themselves to their feet. For those lifts (or elevators) that do not have any handrails, fitting them retrospectively has, in the past, been difficult to do and expensive to implement. This is where the e-li handrail solution is perfect. e-li (short for ‘easy link’) is patent protected and is available in a range of straight and curved handrails in a choice of colours and finishes including handrails incorporating LEDs. The handrails come in a variety of sizes or bespoke sizes can be manufactured to order. More importantly, the e-li handrails can be fitted quickly and easily by one person from inside the lift and can even be fitted on lifts with mirrored walls. To install e-li handrails, it’s as simple as 1, 2, 3: Drill 2cm holes from inside the lift cabin wall where the handrail fixing points need to be. Put the S-shaped or C-shaped fixing bracket and cable through the hole and then pull the cable tight. The S fixing will lay flat against the outside of the cabin wall and will become an anchor for the fixings. The e-li bracket then quickly attaches to the anchor point and is secured in place with a monting tool. e-li rails are incredibly strong with the C-shaped fixing brackets able to be used on lifts with a wall thickness up to 55mm and a shaft gap less than 2.5cm! Each e-li kit comes with the handrails and S-shaped or C-shaped fixing brackets, depending on the lift type, all necessary connections and installation tools. Individual components are also available if any spares are required. If you need a handrail solution for a lift, feel free to contact us for more details or a free quotation.
