Researchers have discovered a strong correlation between severe vitamin D deficiency and mortality rate. They noted that patients from countries with high COVID-19 mortality rates, such as Italy, Spain and the UK, had lower levels of vitamin D than patients in regions that were not as severely affected. The researchers also found that increasing vitamin D serum levels may reduce the incidence and severity of complications due to influenza, pneumonia and COVID-19. It was noted that the average level of vitamin D in each country was strongly associated with the number of cases and mortality, respectively. Vitamin D levels are very low in the aging population, especially in Spain, Italy and Switzerland, this is also the most risky population group for COVID-19.
