Metal Gear je zhora videná akčná adventúra, vytvorená a vydaná firmou Konami v roku 1987 pre počítače MSX2 v Japponsku a časti Európy. Ide o hru ktorá spopularizovala žáner stealth a zároveň prvá ktorej autorom je Hideo Kojima. Hráč ovláda agenta špeciálnej jednotky FOXHOUND menom Solid Snake, ktorý sa vydáva na samostatnú infiltračnú misiu do opevneného štátu Outer Heaven, aby zničil Metal Gear, dvojnohý kráčajúci tank schopný odpaľovať jadrové strely odkiaľkoľvek na svete a jeho úlohou je tiež zachrániť niekoľkých kolegov agentov, ktorých zajal nepriateľ. Neskôr bol vydaný aj port hry pre Famicom už bez autorskej účasti Kojimu, ktorý sa neskôr dočkal vydania na medzinárodných trhoch pre NES v priebehu nasledujúcich dvoch rokov...
